Composer of the Month, November 2017: Muzio Clementi

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 by Sarah Folkerts | Composer of the Month

Muzio Clementi,1752-1832, is an Italian composer of the Classical period.  When young, he spent significant time in England studying the piano. In Clementi's time, our modern-day piano (then called a pianoforte) was just gaining popularity.  In comparison with earlier instruments, the pianoforte was able to create expressive sounds, both loud and soft.

Clementi was a virtuoso pianist, and  the first significant figure who composed music which took advantage of the pianoforte's special features.  He also had a company that manufactured pianofortes.  Because of these facts, Clementi is known as the "Father of the Pianoforte."
