May's Composer of the Month: Ian Axel

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 by Sarah Folkerts | Composer of the Month

Ian Axel was born in New Jersey in 1985, and showed musical talent almost from the very beginning.  He was composing short songs on the piano when he was only 3 years old!

Ian went to NYU after high school to study music business, where he met classmate Chad Vaccarino. Chad loved Ian’s piano music, and encouraged Ian to sing—he even paid for Ian's first voice lesson.  They wrote songs together, and in 2006 Ian began performing them around New York.  Soon after, Ian recorded an album with all of the songs co-written by Chad.  In 2012, they joined forces and formed a band together called A Great Big World.

A Great Big World has won numerous awards, including a Grammy in 2015 for Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance (with Christina Aguilera.)  Their music is often featured on television, including GLEE!, One Tree Hill, MTV, The Amazing Race, ESPN, Good Morning America, the Rachael Ray Show, and more.

Ian lives in New Jersey with his wife Lina and their son Bowie.
